Bosnian Serb sentenced to 34 years

The indictment against him alleged that Janković took part in "a large scale and systematic attack on the non-Serb population in the region of the eastern town of Foča between April 1992 and February 1993."

The charges also included his involvement in the imprisonment, killing and sexual abuse of mostly Muslim non-Serbs.

Janković, who was indicted by the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in 1996 for war crimes, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war, voluntarily surrendered to the ICTY in 2005.

In December 2005 the ICTY decided to transfer Janković to Bosnia-Herzegovina, to be further tried before the local war crimes court.

His 34-year sentence amounts to the longest jail sentence declared by the Sarajevo-based War Crimes Chamber of Bosnia's State Court since its establishment in March 2005.
