"Historic day": Bulgaria and Macedonia ink agreement

According to him, the agreement provides for easier cooperation at economic and political levels, and will increase exchange of goods, services and capital and provide customs duty relief for citizens of both countries.

"This is a message for the EU and NATO, that regional countries have European-minded leaderships and deserve European perspective," Zaev said.

"From this day, the Republic of Bulgaria is an even bigger friend of Macedonia, and people should be proud of this step made by the two countries," Zaev said.

Borisov said that this was the first agreement between the two countries that was signed without mediators, because, as he said, "good neighborly relations and cooperation are more important than anything else."

The day this agreement was signed is described in both countries as "historic."

On the other hand, Macedonia's opposition VMRO-DPMNE led by former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski - still the most influential individual party in the country - strongly opposes the agreement, and accuses the government because the agreement contains "controversial parts that could cause long-term damage to Macedonia's national interests, to the Macedonian nation, language and history."
