Vasiljkovic also described the indictment as "comical, shameless, and rude" and said it "reversed the roles":

"I'm not a criminal, the only crime is this one against me. The aggression on Yugoslavia was committed by domestic traitors and foreign mercenaries. These are now (Croatian) defenders, while I'm now an aggressor. Something's not right here."

As reported by Croatia's index.hr website, Vasiljkovic was brought into the courtroom in handcuffs, and upon entering smiled at the audience that included many foreign and domestic journalists and several diplomats.

Ten judicial policemen were guarding the courtroom, while a number of plainclothes and uniformed police officers were seen in front of it, and in front of the building, according to the report.

Vasiljkovic is charged with acting against the provisions of the Geneva Convention while serving as the commander of a special purpose unit that was a part of the Serb paramilitary forces, and while he was the commander of a training center for the special units Alfa.

He is also charged of torturing, abusing and killing captured members of Croatia's police and army during June and July 1991 in the Knin fortress prison, and in February 1993 in Bruska near Benkovac.

Vasiljkovic is further accused of devising a plan in Glina, in cooperating with the commander of a JNA (Yugoslav People's Army) tank unit, and then capturing the local police station and the suburb Jukinac, as well as villages of Gornji and Donji Vidusevac, in July 1991.

After ten years of hiding in Australia under a different identity, Vasiljkovic was in early July 2015 extradited to Croatia.
