Earlier, Croatia's Vesna Pusic also withdrew her candidature. There are now ten candidates left in the race, among them Serbia's former foreign minister and former president of the UN General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic.

According to unofficial information, when UN Security Council ambassadors on August 5 voted in the second, secret round, Jeremic placed second, behind former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres.

Ahead of the start of campaigning many, including Ban Ki-moon, said they would like to see a woman at the helm of the UN.

The unwritten rule is to rotate the position according to world regions, which means that if the rule is observed this time, the new UN secretary-general will come from Eastern Europe.
