Karamarko also said he thought his move would give HDZ "a new political impulse."He described himself as being in the party "practically since 1989," and, "always in the function of my homeland."
Karamarko said his decision to step down was not made "due to technical problems or pressure from anyone."
Karamarko last week resigned as first deputy prime minister, something that was requested by his coalition partner and fellow deputy prime minister, MOST leader Bozo Petrov. The Croatian government collapsed shortly afterwards.
Before this, a state commission found that Karamarko had been in conflict of interest in the so-called Consultant Affair involving his wife's company Drimia and its business ties with a company owned by his friend Josip Petrovic, a consultant for Hungary's MOL oil company.
Croatia is in a legal dispute with MOL over another oil company, INA.
