Macedonia starts building fence along border with Greece

The purpose of the measure is to "control the entry of refugees and migrants."

The building of the fence started after the Macedonian Ministry of Interior received an official statement from Slovenia, saying this country will no longer accept migrants from areas with no armed conflict, as they will be considered economic migrants.

After receiving the letter, Macedonia last night began to selectively allow migrants across its southern border with Greece, and according to Macedonian media, Serbian police and its Gendarmerie unit "started doing the same" on Serbia's southern border with Macedonia.

According to this, Serbian police stopped by more than 300 refugees from entering the country at the border crossing Tabanovce-Presevo since Wednesday night. Refugees and migrants cross from northern Macedonia to southern Serbia via this border crossing.

The Macedonian Army on Monday began clearing the terrain along the border with Greece preparing for the possibility to build a fence, acting on a decision of the Macedonian Security Council.

Once the fence is up, refugees will be able to enter only via one designated location near Gevgelija and will then be accommodated in a refugee camp near the town, said a statement from the council.
