Croatia deploys mine clearing teams as migrants arrive

Croatia on Wednesday deployed demining teams to the border area near Serbia as refugees started entering that country on foot, avoiding border crossings.

Croatia deploys mine clearing teams as migrants arrive

Reuters noted that the mines were left over in the area from the 1991-95 war, and that the police said they were concerned about the danger they posed.

Meanwhile, the local self-government secretary in the provincial government of Vojvodina, Serbia, Branislav Bugarski, also said he was worried about the minefields around the border with Croatia.

During floods in Serbia in the spring of 2014, water carried mines in the village of Jamena, "and there are certainly areas that have not been demined," he stressed.
