Zagreb wants Serbia to "wait, not strain relations"

The Zagreb daily Jutarnji List writes that from that the Croatian ministry said this is an issue that Croatia will deal with through its institutions.

"Otherwise, we would appreciate if the neighboring country would wait for the problems to solved, as we have always solved them in the past - through institutions, and not for the opportunity to be used to strain relations. The role of politicians is to calm tensions with their statements, and not stir them up," said the ministry, headed by Vesna Pusic.

The abolition of bilingualism on signs on public institutions in Vukovar has caused stormy reactions among Serbs in Croatia, and in Serbia.

Absent, however, was a reaction from Croatia's state leaders.

Serbia sent a note of strong protest warning Croatia that it is under obligation to respect its international commitments, and seeking an urgent reaction from the Croatian state bodies, adding that Vukovar's top officials became known publicly for singing songs of the fascist Ustasha regime of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) - "in a year when the whole world celebrates the 70 anniversary of victory over fascism."

It is expected that Serb representatives in Croatia will appeal against the Vukovar Statute changes to the Ministry of Administration, and should that ministry find that the changes violated the Constitution and the Constitutional Law, which regulates the issues of minority rights, its implementation will be suspended within eight days.

Serb National Council (SNV) in Croatia President Milorad Pupovac said that the past two years have shown there are forces in Croatia stronger than the state and the law, and that Serbs have no other choice but to turn "to the council of security the EU" because achievements of peaceful reintegration have been jeopardized - and also because of non-compliance with the UN Charter on the right to language and script.

"We will turn also to the Council of Europe and the European Parliament," said Pupovac.
