Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has been charged with fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering.

Romanian PM charged, refuses to step down

The agency said that Ponta is the highest-ranking official "to be swept up in a major drive by the DNA anti-corruption agency," and that "dozens of former politicians and judges have been convicted over the past several years in one of Europe's poorest and graft-plagued countries."

Ponta has refused calls for him to resign, "firmly denying the allegations and promising to cooperate with the probe," said AFP, although he on Sunday announced he was stepping down as head of the Social Democrat party "while he fights the corruption allegations."
