Right-wing party wins in Bulgarian election

Speaking to reporters, Borisov noted that under the circumstances, he "did not see how a government could be formed,"but added he was still willing to "take the risk" and lead the country.

GERB won about 33 percent of the vote, Alpha Research and Gallup said late on Sunday, and according to this the main opponent, the Socialist Party, took about 16 percent of the vote.

According to these estimates, Bulgaria will most probably have a coalition government, Reuters reported. Official election results are expected on Monday.

This will be the fifth Bulgarian government in the last two years during which the country was faced with massive street protests and dissatisfaction.

According to news agencies, disappointment was the reason the turnout was below 50 percent, the lowest in the last 25 years.

Bulgaria is the poorest EU member-state where average monthly salary is about EUR 400. It is yet to deal with corruption and organized crime, and needs fundamental health care, pension and education system reforms.
