EU official pledges assistance to Bosnia

"The European Union will fully and actively devote attention to helping Bosnia-Herzegovina in order to eliminate short-term and long-term consequences. We immediately responded to the Bosnian authorities' requests that were coming to the Center for Emergency Interventions of the European Commission," said the EU official.

According to him, an EU Civil Protection team is deployed to Bosnia and working on the initial assessment. The European Commission delivered satellite imagery of flooded areas to competent authorities and is participating in the financing of aid delivery.

"I have nothing but praise for the efforts of the citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina, which, as we have seen the last few days have shown a tremendous spirit of solidarity and willingness to help. I also welcome the help sent by our partners and individuals around the world," said Sorensen.

He specified that so far material and financial support came from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden and the UK, reported the Fena news agency.

Currently, the European Commission services are urgently working on an aid package for the country, it was also heard.

"The first step, of course, is to assess the damage. The European Union will continue its active engagement in accordance with the situation," said Sorensen.
