Montenegro has sea coast and lakes, but imports fish
Although it has a 250-kilometer coast along the Adriatic Sea, Montenegro is without a single fish processing facility, or a fishing port.Currently the country has 17 fishing boats, built 13 to 40 years ago, and buys all the tools and materials used for fishing from manufacturers in neighboring countries.
Boško Ivanović, who chairs the Association of Professional Fishermen Južni Jadran, told the daily Večernje novosti that incentives were necessary, and accused the authorities of having no strategy to develop the sector.
Former mayor of Bar, now Tourism Minister Branimir Gvozdenović, on several occasions promised that a fish processing facility would be set up in the Free Zone of the Port of Bar, but the project was never realized.
Ivanović noted that the fishing sector needed favorable loans, "donations from EU funds," lower taxes, amended legislation, and participation of the state in order to secure new vessels and equipment.
He also said that research done by the Institute of the Adriatic Sea Biology found that Montenegro's waters were particularly rich in bluefish.
