Strong earthquake hits Greek island

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) put the epicenter 12 kilometers from the town of Lixourion, 300 kilometers west of Athens.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the same region on January 26, damaging hundreds of buildings.

AFP noted in its report that in 1953, Kefalonia was struck by a major earthquake that left "virtually every house on the island was destroyed."
