BELGRADE "Ethnic and national" tensions in Croatia are not subsiding in 2014, says the head of the Serbian Government Office for the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region. Slavka Draskovic added that "stepped-up regional cooperation at all levels and continuous education" are the only real solution to this problem. "Education, cooperation only solution to tensions" "Even one of the biggest Christian holidays, celebrated by Orthodox Christians on January 7, failed to pass without incidents," Draskovic said in a statement. She added that there has been a reaction from Croatian institutions, but that additional efforts must be made, since the objectives of certain interest groups are detrimental not only to Serbs in Croatia, but also to Croatian society as a whole. At the very beginning of 2014, between January 3 and January 5, the Orthodox cemetery in Cepin, near Osijek, was desecrated, she said in the statement, describing as encouraging the fact that a police investigation was launched immediately, and that the local police chief issued an apology to Serbs for the act. Draskovic also warned that two bilingual signs were removed and stolen from the buildings of the misdemeanor and municipal courts in Vukovar on January 5, with another four signs damaged, while "a vehicle with Belgrade registration plates has been attacked in Split."
