PODGORICA Presidential candidate Miodrag Lekic’s supporters have rallied in Podgorica, demanding annulment of results of the April 7 presidential election. The protesters have also called for new presidential elections. Montenegro: Rally against election irregularities Strong police forces have been deployed to downtown Podgorica. The protesters are carrying banners saying “Lekic new president”, “Resistance is our duty”, “We defend our victory, we defend our Montenegro”. They are also flying Montenegrin, Serbian and EU flags. The protest is organized by Lekic’s Democratic Front and other opposition parties. The Electoral Commission (DIK) released earlier that according to preliminary results, Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS) candidate Filip Vujanovic won the election after 161,940 citizens of 51.21 percent voted for him. According to the same results, Lekic won the votes of 154,290 voters or 48.79 percent. However, according to results of Lekic’s campaign headquarters, he won 50.5 percent of the vote while Vujanovic won 49.5 percent. The Constitutional Court of Montenegro has rejected Lekic’s appeal to the DIK’s decision not to accept his complaints about election irregularities.
