Montenegrin police were wiretapping Podgorica-based daily Dan’s editor in chief and other journalists, Montenegrin media have reported.

PODGORICA Montenegrin police were wiretapping Podgorica-based daily Dan’s editor in chief and other journalists, Montenegrin media have reported. According to reports, the police wiretapped Dan’s reporters in order to discover who their sources and political contacts were. “Montenegrin police wiretapped journalists” Dan’s Deputy Editor in Chief Nikola Markovic and journalists Mitar Rakcevic and Drazen Zivkovic were wiretapped, according to the media. Markovic was allegedly wiretapped, among other things, because he released confidential files regarding the investigation against runaway drug lord Darko Saric. The police also monitored his contacts with opposition leaders, representatives of NGOs and independent media. Montenegrin Interior Minister Rasko Konjevic has ordered that an emergency control be performed in order to determine whether wiretapping equipment was illegally used last year. Former Montenegrin Police Director Bozidar Vuksanovic has, on the other hand, denied allegations that the police wiretapped journalists during his term in office and that he most certainly did not issue such orders.
