Bosnian FM says he did not violate Constitution

SARAJEVO Bosnia-Herzegovina FM Zlatko Lagumdzija says he did not violate the Constitution by instructing a Bosnian rep in the UN to vote for the resolution on Syria. He sent a letter to the Serbian member of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Nebojsa Radmanovic on Wednesday, claiming that he did not violate the Constitution and laws. Bosnian FM says he did not violate Constitution Lagumdzija stressed that he would never side with the lethal foreign policy of voting against the Resolution on Syria, stating that Radmanovic should explain to the Bosnia-Herzegovina public what had motivated him to “put Bosnia-Herzegovina on the wrong side”. The Bosnia-Herzegovina’s foreign minister assessed that by adopting Radmanovic’s position to vote against the resolution, Bosnia-Herzegovina would “side with Myanmar’s military junta, Lukashenko’s Belarus, Chavez’s Venezuela or North Korea”. He also rejected any criminal and constitutional responsibility, adding that he had sent the instruction to the representative of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Mission in the UN based on a letter from Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Chairman Bakir Izetbegovic. Lagumdzija said that he was informed by Izetbegovic on August 3 that the Presidency had adopted a clear position on the situation in Syria by voting on the UN Security Council Resolution on Syria on November 4, 2011 and that the Presidency then unilaterally supported the Resolution on Syria on February 17. “The latest UN Security Council Resolution does not differ from the previous two, either in its spirit or its words,” he wrote in the letter. The foreign minister pointed out that he had requested a position on the latest resolution on Syria from the Presidency twice but that instead of the official position, he had gotten Radmanovic’s “personal position” that Bosnia-Herzegovina could not support the resolution and the “official position” from Izetbegovic that Bosnia-Herzegovina “should vote for the resolution in the spirit of continuity and principles”. Lagumdzija claims that, aside from the Presidency chairman’s instruction, he had made the decision based on the fact that one of key priorities of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s foreign policy was the EU membership. “Instead of sending me letters, I would ask you to explain to them what motivated you to request that Bosnia-Herzegovina take the wrong side with your personal position,” he stressed in the letter to Radmanovic. Republic of Srpska (RS) President Milorad Dodik requested on Tuesday that Lagumdzija step down or be relieved of his duty because he “violated the Constitution and the law by giving the instruction to the representative of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Mission in the UN to support the Resolution on Syria.
