Split Mayor Zeljko Kerum has expressed satisfaction over the fact that the gay Pride Parade was held without incidents. However, he stressed that gay parades were not welcome in Split. Croatian town mayor: Gays aren’t welcome “I am glad that this year’s Split Pride went without incidents because Split residents listened to our recommendation to ignore the parade. Security forces were strong and such police engagement in fact represents an unreasonable spending of money,” the Split mayor said in a statement. Kerum complained that a large part of the town had been blocked most of the day, that traffic had been disrupted and that people had not been able to walk around freely. “The Split residents have, by ignoring the parade, shown what they think about it, that they are not interested, that they do not want it in their town and that it is not welcome in Split,” he pointed out. A few days ahead of the Pride Parade Kerum criticized the Interior Ministry and police for announcing that they would provide security at the event.
