Montenegro is celebrating its Independence Day on Monday, in honor of the 2006 referendum which made Montenegro a sovereign nation again.

Montenegro is celebrating its Independence Day on Monday, in honor of the 2006 referendum which made Montenegro a sovereign nation again. According to official results from the year, a total of 419,240 citizens or 86.5 of the electorate took to the referendum. Montenegro celebrates six years of independence A total of 230,661 citizens or 55.5 percent of the citizens were in favor of Montenegro gaining independence, while 185,002, or 44.5 percent wanted to stay in the federation with Serbia. Montenegrin Prime Minister Igor Luksic said on Friday that the country had over the course of six years shown that it was capable of successfully responding to all challenges and that it was taking decisive steps toward its European future. “We have made Montenegro’s good neighborly, regional and international relations stronger, we have given an additional impulse to regional initiatives, we are an active participant in the international events as a member of the UN, Council of Europe, OSCE and recently the World Trade Organization (WTO),” Luksic noted. He added that visa liberalization and the EU candidate status were also Montenegro’s successes. “We are on a threshold of starting the EU negotiations and a step away from the full-fledged membership in NATO. We are a credible regional and international partner. We have been recognized as a champion of European and Euro-Atlantic integrations in our region,” the Montenegrin PM concluded.
