Romanian President Traian Basescu said on Friday that Romania did not want to block Serbia's EU candidacy, but rather remind the country about its obligations. However, continued Basescu - the issue was "grossly inflated by journalists and politicians". Romanian president blames media for "inflating problems" We have already had long and friendly discussions with Belgrade on the issue of Vlach minority, Basescu said, adding that it is not true that Romania blocked Serbia's candidacy, since Serbia was bound to receive the status at the spring EU summit. Basescu said that the issue was hugely inflated by the media and irresponsible politicians. At the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, due to Romanian objections in relation to the position of the Vlach minority in Timocka Krajina (eastern Serbia), the country was just recommended for the status, and the decision was finally adopted on Thursday evening at the summit of EU heads of state and government. Basescu underlined that Romania withdrew its remarks as soon as Serbia and Romania signed the protocol which defines the rights of Vlachs in Serbia, guaranteeing those who want to declare themselves as Romanians freedoms in relation to education, religious service, access to the media in the Romanian language. Last year, we agreed 90 percent of the agreement, but our Serbian friends forgot that, probably due to Kosovo, Basescu said. We just wanted to remind them about that, Basescu explained.
