Several thousands of people rallied in Budapest on Saturday to protest against the European Union (EU). The protesters demanded Hungary’s exit from the Union. Hungarians hold anti-EU protest Two MPs of Jobbik, the second largest party in the Hungarian parliament, torched the EU flag in front of the European Commission (EC) Office in Budapest. “This week the EU declared a war on Hungary in a very harsh and open way,” Jobbik’s Csanad Szegedi stressed. The protest represents an additional pressure on the Hungarian government which is trying to reach an agreement on financial aid with the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in order to avoid insolvency. The EU and the IMF have piled pressure on the government to change controversial legislation on its central bank and judiciary as a condition for continuation of the talks on financial aid. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that Hungary still wants to finance itself but that it needs the deal with the EU and the IMF in order to ensure investors’ trust. (Beta) Tanjug
