The Montenegrin Ministry of Agriculture said that "for now", it had no plans to respond to Serbia's ban on wheat exports with countermeasures. The measures would consist of restricting other agricultural imports from Serbia. Hurt by wheat ban, Montenegro "plans no countermeasures" The ministry announced in Podgorica that it would work to protect domestic production from unfair competition and measures that are not in line with the regional CEFTA free trade agreement. "This concerns in particular protection of domestic producers of milk, dairy products and bottled water from dumping prices and other forms of unfair competition, no matter which state they come from," said the ministry. Its officials told Beta news agency that Montenegro would not introduce "trade countermeasures" against Serbia. The country will now buy its wheat "from destinations where it is cheapest", officials said, adding that it is a commodity "available everywhere". Earlier this month Serbia imposed a temporary ban on wheat exports in order to protect the domestic market and curb the rising prices of bread. Previously, Montenegrin Agriculture Minister Tarzan Milosevic assessed that the Serbian government should have informed their Montenegrin counterparts about its intention to impose the ban, all in line with CEFTA. Milosevic also said that Montenegro is entitled to protect "its own agricultural production", according to the regional agreement. Montenegro imports wheat, beef and chicken meat, along with milk and bottled water from Serbia. Serbia supplies Montenegro with 90 percent of wheat and flour consumed in its market, which is worth EUR 35mn annually. At the same time, that country pays EUR 30mn for Serbian bottled water, despite the fact it has several water factories of its own.
