Superstition is a serious business in Romania, so serious the government decided to tax it in these austere times, and as part of a drive to slash tax evasion. Today a coven of a dozen witches makes its way to the capital to hex the politicians in protest, a threat that carries clout in a nation where belief in such things is mainstream. Revolting witches hex Romanian government “I’m fearless. I’m not afraid even of the country’s president, and if he’s got something personal – may God protect us!” says witch Bratara Buzea. God and witchcraft make strange bedfellows unless you realise Romania’s Orthodox church tolerates the beliefs. However not all witches are upset about paying taxes. “I’m very happy because the Romanian government considered that our magic skills are finally authorized in Romania,” says Mihaela Minca. Leading politicians are often see wearing purple on important days to ward off the evil eye, and the brew of dead dog, cat excrement and mandrake the witches plan to chuck into the Danube today. One roadside sign near Bucharest announces “the most powerful witch in Romania”. The taxman says she, like most fortune tellers, should have seen the law coming.
