Since it first emerged in 2003 following the capture of terrorist organization November 17, Revolutionary Struggle has targeted government buildings and bombed banks and the Athens Stock Exchange. It also launched a rocket-propelled grenade attack against the US Embassy in Athens in 2007, causing damage but no injuries. The group reappeared shortly after the police killing of a teenager in December 2008, claiming responsibility for shooting at riot police guarding the culture ministry in central Athens. Since being elected last October, the Socialist government has declared an open war on anarchist groups. On Monday the six suspects arrived at Athens' main court escorted by anti-terrorist police, while dozens of people belonging to leftist organizations shouted slogans of support. Police reportedly discovered proclamations and plans for future attacks in two of the detainees' homes, but so far have not been able to locate weapons or explosives.
