Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has announced his resignation at a news conference in Zagreb this Wednesday. Earlier in the day, daily Jutarnji List quoted its sources who said Sanader had already notified his closest associates of his decision, as well as his Croatian Democratic Alliance (HDZ) party club in the country's parliament. This has in the meantime been confirmed The media was speculating that Sanader would either withdraw from politics for good, or that he was preparing to run for president. But the Croat PM said that he had decided to leave politics altogether. Sanader did not reveal what motivated him to make this move, but said illness was not the reason.
