Albania has passed a law envisioning the dismissal from public office of all individuals linked to the secret police during the communist era. The Albanian parliament adopted the bill with 72 votes. Berisha "cleansing stain of communism" The other 63 MPs attending the session boycotted the vote, while one abstained. Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that Albania needed “to cleanse the stain of communism.“ The law will apply to all former secret police members and associates between November 1944 and December 1990. The opposition boycotted the vote, claiming that Berisha’s Democrats would exploit the law against their political opponents. The U.S., the UK and the OSCE had called on the parliament to postpone the debate on the law. The communists ruled Albania for over 40 years, during which time the secret police held immense power.
