Croatian President Stjepan Mesic asked current Prime Minister Ivo Sanader to form a new government Saturday evening. Sanader's center-right HDZ party won 66 seats in the 153-seat parliament in elections on October 25, but the party was 11 seats short of being able to form a government. Sanader asked to form new cabinet Following negotiations with two smaller parties and minority lawmakers, Sanader was able to secure 77 seats in parliament. The current opposition Social Democrat Party, which won 56 seats in the October elections, was unable to find a coalition partner.
