Greece and Turkey agreed Tuesday to expand military cooperation as part of confidence building measures. Among the measures which were agreed upon by Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyianni and her visiting Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan are high level visits between Greek and Turkish armed forces posted at the heavily militarized zones along Greece's north-eastern border with Turkey. "We know that it requires difficult efforts to improve the climate between our two countries ... and it will require continued hard work," said Bakoyianni during a press conference with Turkey's Ali Babacan. On the issue of the divided Mediterranean island of Cyprus, Turkey's foreign minister said that Ankara will make every effort to try and solve the problems dividing the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities on the island. He also thanked Greece for its continued support in his country's efforts to join the European Union. The two traditional foes, Greece and Turkey - which have come close to war three times in recent years - have undergone a gradual thawing in relations since twin earthquakes struck both in 1999, resulting in a mutual outpouring of support. The two NATO neighbours remain divided over territorial rights in the Aegean and over Cyprus. On Tuesday, the two ministers also agreed on a date for the visit of Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis to Turkey in the new year. Babacan, Bakoyianni talk to reporters in Athens (Beta)
