Macedonia rejects UN proposal in "name dispute"

Macedonia’s PM and president have rejected a proposal from UN Special Envoy Matthew Nimitz in the name dispute. “There is one article that we definitely cannot accept, and that article says that the Republic of Macedonia should accept a name for international use, that differs from the Republic’s constitutional name,” Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski was quoted as saying in a written statement. Macedonia rejects UN proposal in "name dispute" According to Gruevski, Nimitz’s proposal, that has not been made public, envisages Macedonia not using the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia in international institutions, and only using it in bilateral relations with other states. The prime minister said that “Macedonian leaders will continue to work together with institutions to discuss, analyze and find positive and negative aspects, although I must stress that as far as this proposal is considered, we’re not prepared to budge.” “We can however discuss other parts of the Nimitz draft proposal,” he added. President Branko Crvenkovski, who also reviewed the proposal, agreed with this statement. Gruevski’s comments followed a telephone conversation with Crvenkovski. Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki said yesterday that Nimitz’s draft proposal was positive and that it had been sent to the prime minister and president for assessment.
