UNMIK chief visits Belgrade ahead of UNSC session on Kosovo

UNMIK chief visits Belgrade ahead of UNSC session on Kosovo

According to the Serbian government, the two officials "discussed assessments of the current political and security situation in Kosovo and Metohija, the perspective of Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and the work of UNMIK."

They "emphasized the importance of further uninterrupted engagement of this mission in areas vital for the survival, normal and dignified life of Serbs and members of other non-Albanian communities in Kosovo."

Dacic "expressed his gratitude for the efforts made regarding exercise of the mandate of UNMIK, with the expectation that the Mission will continue this in the upcoming period in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244."

Zahir Tanin was also received by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, with whom he discussed "the current political and security situation in Kosovo and Metohija, ahead of the UN Security Council session on August 16."

According to the president's press services, the two interlocutors "agreed that the presence of the UN mission is very important for maintaining stability in Kosovo and Metohija, both through the consistent implementation of UN Resolution 1244, and by engaging in the implementation of the agreements reached within the framework of the Brussels dialogue."

The UNMIK chief "pointed to the necessity of continuing the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina," a statement said.

Vucic and Tanin "also stressed the importance of conducting an internal dialogue on Kosovo and Metohija."

They also discussed ways in which UNMIK could, within its mandate, contribute to resolving specific issues aimed at improving the daily life of Serbs, Albanians and others in Kosovo.

Vucic and Tanin "noted that cooperation between the state organs of Serbia and the UN Mission was good," the statement said.

Tanjug reported on Wednesday that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his regular report, to be presented next week, assessed that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue was facing serous challenges, warned about the lack of progress, including on the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, and called on both sides to "revive the process."
