Putin also stressed that Vucic is known in Russia as "a principled supporter of stronger friendly relations between Russia and Serbia and expressed confidence that his work as head of state would contribute to further developing the Russian-Serbian strategic partnership for the benefit of both fraternal peoples."Also on Monday, in her remarks ahead of a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini mentioned the presidential elections in Serbia, and said the following:
"Congratulations to Vucic who turns now president and not prime minister anymore. We have seen yesterday a very clear result in the Serbian elections, so I take this opportunity to congratulate him and wish him all the best in his new capacity, and obviously we will follow closely the follow-up of these presidential elections in Serbia."
Late on Sunday, the first foreign official to congratulate Vucic was Austria's Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, who posted the following tweet: Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern also took to Twitter on Sunday evening to say, "Congratulations to Vucic. A stable Balkans and a prosperous Serbia are in the interest of Europe and Austria."
EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn posted two tweets, congratulating Vucic on his election as Serbian president with a convincing result, and adding:
"Looking forward to working with new president as partners and friends on EU accession. Serbia and EU: #bettertogether!"
