"Political will needed to probe crimes against journalists"

These conclusions were then in late February presented during a conference on safety of journalists in the Western Balkans, held in Vienna, Austria.

"The conference (in Pristina) was an initiative by journalists and journalist associations and I think it was a very important and very significant thing that the two journalist associations in Kosovo - the Association of Kosovo Journalists, and the Association of Serbian Journalists in Kosovo - both agreed on a joint statement, pointing to the need to establish a commission to investigate these cases of missing journalists," he said, and added:

"One of the participants in the conference, prominent Serbian journalist Veran Matic, who has been involved in the Serbian commission, and also the Montenegrin commission for investigating these cases of missing journalists, was sharing his experiences and offering his advice on how this could be done in Kosovo."

However, the OSCE mission head noted that the establishment of such a commission requires, above all, political will.

Braathu also stressed that the cases of the 13 journalist murdered or kidnapped from 1998 to 2005 - seven Serbs and six ethnic Albanians - represents "a great problem for Kosovo's society."
