Jeremic: I'd be UN chief today if I was "NATO candidate"

"I strongly support military neutrality, if I become president I will stand for that to be included in the Constitution, so that it is no longer just a political slogan," said Jeremic.

According to him, the lack of job opportunities is the biggest problem for people in Serbia.

"And in general, economic and every other perspective of the people in this country, from what I've heard traveling around Serbia, is not something we can be proud of today. This is the first thing that should be changed. We need to enable people in this country to start working. Many are saying that we are a lazy people, that we must change our habits and our mindset. I believe that we are a diligent people, well qualified, but it is necessary to change the system that prevents ordinary people to get jobs and earn a dignified life for their families. All change starts in the head and from the head, and therefore I believe that the elections for the president are a key watershed ahead of us," said Jeremic.

When the Sputnik journalist noted that "some claim he is a NATO candidate, while others call him a Russian man," Jeremic said that when it comes to the former claim - if there was truth to it, he would "probably be UN secretary-general today - rather than someone who finished second in that election, with a large number of votes around the world, among them the vote of Russia, for which I am extremely grateful."

"This support was unquestionable from the first round to the last, and this is something which I think reflects also the relationship between Serbia and Russia, and a kind of trust that Minister (Sergei) Lavrov and I and other state officials had been building for years. The issue of relations between Russia and Serbia is not a question of whether this or that party is in power - it is simply a kind of a constant, and as president of Serbia I will advocate for preserving and improving relations between Serbia and Russia. But I am above all someone who has represented the interests of Serbia and the Serbian interests are the only thing I have on the table. The attempts to align me and my policy with this or that side are simply malicious," said Jeremic.
