2 chapters to be opened, Croatia's consent for third awaited
This decision was taken at a meeting of the Working Group on Enlargement on Friday, when all members gave their consent for the opening of Chapter 25, which concerns science and research.Chapter 5, (public procurement) was already seen as "safe," while the decision on Chapter 26 (culture and education) is being postponed until December 13.
Sources told Tanjug in Brussels that the Working Group will meet once again on Monday in an attempt to reach consensus on a common position of all member-states on Chapter 26, for which there is still no approval from Croatia.
It is assessed in Brussels that by opening these three chapters Serbia would make a big step on its path of European integration.
It is added that in case Chapters 25 and 26 are opened on Tuesday, they would also be closed at the same meeting, as these are "easy chapters" within which there are no specific EU standards, nor criteria for their closing.
In terms of Chapter 5, it is particularly important because EU standards in public procurement necessary among other things for a successful fight against corruption would be introduced into Serbia's legislation and practices.
The Intergovernmental Conference where new chapters will be opened is scheduled for December 13 in Brussels. The third meeting of the EU-Serbia Stabilization and Association Council will be held the same day.
