Report: EU chapters with Serbia to be opened on Dec. 13

The European Union will open Chapter 5, on public procurement, in Serbia's membership negotiations on Dec. 13, in Brussels, Beta reported on Wednesday.

Report: EU chapters with Serbia to be opened on Dec. 13

Officials in the know from the EU Council of Ministers confirmed this information for Beta, adding that new chapters in membership talks with Montenegro would be opened at that time, too.

The officials in Brussels said they did not have confirmation yet, but that they expected Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic to attend the inter-governmental conference where new chapters are opened. He had announced his attendance earlier.

Most EU members have accepted the European Commission's negotiating platform to open all three new chapters in talks with Serbia. Representatives of EU governments will discuss the issue anew on Dec. 9 in the Council of Ministers' working group for enlargement and neighborhood.

Many EU members believe the agreement on justice and telecommunications in the Belgrade-Pristina dialog was a substantial step forward in the normalization of relations between the two sides, an important factor for moving forward in EU integration.

The final word on the issue should come on Dec. 13 from ambassadors, resident representatives of EU members to the West Balkans Committee.
