President defends army personnel's right to protest

"Those who do not wish to have their own army, will regret having someone else's," Nikolic remarked after signing a book of condolences at the Cuban embassy for the former Cuban President Fidel Castro.

Nikolic added that he will talk with Defense Minister Zoran Djordjevic, "to see how far things have progressed" related to the Army Trade Union protest.

"It's obvious that one side is saying one thing, the other something else, and we must see what the problem is and see whether it can be solved, and it certainly can and should be solved," the president said.

According to Nikolic, "everyone has a right to protest and everyone being protested against, or whom they think can help, is under obligation to take a stance on the matter."

About 1,000 members of the Army Trade Union, and citizens who support them, on Sunday marched in Belgrade demanding higher salaries and new employment contracts, and delivering a letter with their demands to the president.

The Defense Trade Union of Serbia said it did not support the protest "because it is possible it also had political, rather than just trade union, motives."

The number of those who protested "shows that the positions of the trade union leadership are not shared by the members of the Serbian Army (VS)," the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
