"If Serbia acted like Croatia, it would be condemned"

If Serbia were the one demanding non-application of a law on universal jurisdiction - as Croatia is doing - it would be subjected to international condemnation.

"If Serbia acted like Croatia, it would be condemned"

"Today WW2 Nazis are being put on trial, who are close to 100 years old, they're put on trial without hesitation, while now all of a sudden this (Serbia's universal jurisdiction law) is a problem. If Serbia said that, we would be subjected to condemnation of the entire international community, they would ask to erase us from the map, and would not allow Serbia to exist," Vulin told TV Pink.

He pointed out that the "famous" law has existed for ten years, "but has not all of a sudden become important" and noted that if that legislation did not exist, Serbia would not be able to prosecute anyone who is not "directly" from its territory.

"War crimes are not something that needs to be measured by borders. I do not think it is acceptable in the 21st century to think someone cannot be prosecuted because they are Croatian, or a defender. Oh, really - if you committed the criminal offense of war crime, if you did, then that's the reason for an investigation, for jail, if not, then you didn't," said Vulin.

He added that "the reality is there are much bigger penalties for poaching than for the crimes committed (against Serbs in Croatia) in the Medak Pocket or in the Pakrac Field" - and that Serbia "will continue to act responsibly and reasonably."

Vulin spoke after Croatian Foreign Minister Miro Kovac said Serbia would be faced with tough sanctions "if it arrested some Croatian citizen."
