Party leader warns about Russians as he welcomes EU progress

"Anyone who truly loves this country and wants better living in it, today rejoices. Opening chapters 23 and 24 in the negotiations between Serbia and EU is not only a great encouragement and a strong impetus to European integration of our country, but also an introduction to the big and long-awaited reform of our society," said Canak.

According to him, Serbia "cannot allow the opening of a Russian military base if it wants a clear European path and a better life for its citizens - despite the fact that the base is equally dreamed about by some politicians in the government and in the opposition, such as Tomislav Nikolic, Ivica Dacic and Sanda Raskovic-Ivic."

"The fact that the EU is opening a big door to Serbia at the moment of a great pain because of the tragedy caused by the terrible terrorist attack in Nice, and on the other hand, a series of major political events recently, ranging from Brexit to the attempted coup in Turkey, shows just how important our country is to the European family, and to what extent the EU is our true friends," said the leader of the LSV.

Canak then added that Serbia's "path to the door of the EU" had been long, and that "a lot of strength and work of all governments since 2000 has been invested in it."

"Judicial reform, building the rule of law, fight against corruption and discrimination, protection of the rights of women, children, persons with disabilities and many other areas covered by these chapters, place before Serbia concrete tasks that await concrete results, and all this leads to building an orderly society and a modern, European country," said Canak.

According to him, in the coming period only a common security policy of the EU and the Western Balkan countries can respond to the acute problems of the migrant crisis and the fight against terrorism, "in which Serbia, although it is not yet an EU member, proved to be a real and reliable partner in joint solutions ".
