"Serbia-Russia relations based on interest, not friendship"

Russia's attempts to obstruct the accession of Montenegro to NATO harm its own interests, and look like closing the stable door long after the horse has bolted.

"Serbia-Russia relations based on interest, not friendship"

"Moscow's reaction to NATO's invitation to Podgorica last year to join the alliance looked liked the anger and outrage of a jilted lover. Many of our public officials have sent the following message: If you enter NATO, your relations with Russia will be developing quite differently than before," said the article.

According to it, Russia has "a completely specific attitude toward Montenegro, different that toward other countries."

"When it comes to Montenegro joining NATO, the Russian leadership feels like Caesar as he utters, 'Et tu, Brute?'," the commentary said, noting, however, that this "feeling" is not justified, as Montenegro's membership represents "no real threat to Russia's security."

"On the contrary - taking into account the traditional historic sympathies toward Russia of a significant part of the Montenegrin population, the country's membership in the alliance could even be favorable for Moscow. Russia would not be bothered at all by a friend within NATO," the paper writes, adding:

"Why, when we have close, friendly and partnership relations with some NATO members, are we telling the leaders in Podgorica: when you join the alliance we will not be your friend any more. Where did these double standards come from, for whose use do we so love to accuse the West?"

According to Beta, the author, Mikhail Rostovsky, further stated that Moscow "holds the wrong position on Montenegro's accession to NATO - that allegedly a majority of Montenegro's population does not want it, and that Serbia could follow Montenegro into the alliance."

But, said the article, Serbia is "not joining NATO" and "not introducing sanctions against Russia" - only "not because of the historic friendship between Serbs and Russians" but rather because Belgrade is "also guided by its naked interests."

"As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia is a barrier in the way of international recognition of Kosovo's independence. Of course Belgrade is deeply interested in preserving such a barrier, and in not having any quarrels with Moscow," the paper said.
