EU "pushing Serbia away - and could be rejected by Serbia"

The EU is pushing Serbia away from itself, so it should not be surprised if Serbians vote like the British in some future referendum, says Ljubinka Milincic.

EU "pushing Serbia away - and could be rejected by Serbia"

Milincic thinks that Brussels "wants Serbia - a small country that cannot survive alone - one moment, and doesn't the next."

"We do everything that is being asked of us, and then they open the door to the Turks," she remarked.

Milincic is also unclear on the reason behind the talk of a stronger Russian influence on Serbia in the wake of Brexit:

"Relations with Russia could not be much better than they are, they are constantly on the rise, we saw both the prime minister and the president visiting Moscow. I don't know what's needed to increase the influence. It certainly doesn't depend on Britain, and (its) referendum."

Asked about the Russian president's message regarding the composition of Serbia's future government, she said Vladimir Putin "merely stated that people with a friendly orientation toward Russia should be in the Serbian government."

According to her, "nobody in Russia is rejoicing because of Brexit, but nobody's particularly sorry, either."

"Moscow has not officially shown any interest in whether Britain leaves or remains. Putin even said that he didn't think it was a move that would help anyone," she said, adding that despite the turbulence within the EU, the bloc would not abandon its anti-Russia sanctions, and that "while they may soften them after all - Russia does not expect any particular change."

Milincic also said it was good that Russia and Turkey have started to mend relations.

"That also suits us, it is to our advantage that gas starts flowing via Turkey to this part of Europe. Gas will be a topic for a long time to come," the journalist concluded.
