Nikolic and Seselj served as best men at each other's weddings and were in the past close political associates, but have not met since 2008, when Nikolic, along with Aleksandar Vucic, left the SRS to form the Serb Progressive Party (SRS).

After his acquittal by the Hague Tribunal, Seselj on several occasion openly attacked Nikolic, while media speculated Nikolic would avoid holding post-election consultations altogether in order to avoid a meeting with Seselj.

Nikolic's invitation, given to the media by the SRS, said that he on Thursday met with SNS leader Aleksandar Vucic, who informed him that his pre-election coalition had a majority to form a government.

"Before I propose a candidate for the head of government to the National Assembly, I am ready to hear your opinion," the president wrote.

The Radicals won 22 seats in Serbia's National Assembly in the April 23 snap parliamentary elections. The SNS has 131 out of the Assembly's 250 seats.
