Serbia is committed to remaining militarily neutral, Zoran Djordjevic, the defense minister in Serbia's outgoing government, said in Moscow on Tuesday.

Defense minister in Moscow: We're committed to neutrality

Djordjevic and Bordyuzha met on the sidelines of the 5th Moscow Conference on International Security, the Serbian government said.

They discussed the issues of participation in peacekeeping operations, the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking which constitutes a serious global threat.

Serbia cooperates with NATO within the Partnership for Peace program, but the country would like to remain militarily neutral.

“Serbia has no aspirations for full membership in NATO and this enables us, as well as CSTO members, to be an active regional and global security actor,” Djordjevic said.

Djordjevic stressed that Serbia's main foreign policy goal was to become a full-fledged member of the EU while at the same time maintaining "excellent relations with all partners around the world." In this context, he said the country was making an effort to develop good partnerships with CSTO countries, "which especially applies to Russia, Belarus, and Armenia."

A statement posted on the Serbian MoD's website added it was "especially stressed that Serbia is conducting an independent foreign policy, respecting its national interests, and will continue to be guided by these principles, especially in relation to the current migrant crisis."
