Croatia's complaints "more political than legal" - minister
Selakovic told state broadcaster RTS that what is now contentious was something that was once asked of Serbia - to introduce the principle of universal jurisdiction."This is not contentious for us, it enabled us to prosecute many (persons) for whom there was reasonable suspicion that they committed war crimes in civil wars, and we did that," the minister said.
He added that the principle of universal jurisdiction in prosecuting war crimes cases is something advocated by most developed countries, both legally and politically.
Selaković reiterated that this is a bilateral dispute and should therefore be dealt with in that way - "a topic for bilateral meetings, not for sabotaging Serbia in this process."
He added it was very important for Serbia that "27 of the 28 EU states supported it," and that this shows the results of the country's foreign and internal policy.
"This speaks highly also about the reforms that have started to give results. Any support is important to us especially when it comes from the most powerful centers," said Selakovic and added that he believed Serbia's efforts so far will bear fruit, and that the country "will have chapters 23 and 24 opened."
