Police director: 1,000 migrants currently "stuck" in Serbia

"Serbia will not be raising any new borders but will, in line with regulations, defend the existing ones," Rebic told reporters after a meeting of police directors from the Balkan migrant route countries.

He said there were currently about 7,000 migrants on the Greece-Macedonia border and added that Serbia was "doing everything to prevent illegal entries" while at the same time "allowing everyone who is trying to enter the country in line with regulations that right."

The meeting in Belgrade today was attended by police directors from Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Macedonia, Croatia, Holland, and representatives of the European Commission.

They concluded that stronger border controls should be used to prevent illegal migration, and ward off the creation of big pressure on the Balkan route countries.
