Health Minister Zdravko Loncar has confirmed that he bought an apartment in Belgrade from the wife of a member of the Zemun Clan crime gang.

Minister confirms he bought apartment from gangster's wife

His reaction came a day after the KRIK website said that Loncar in 2002, while he was a doctor in the Clinical Center of Serbia's Emergency Center, bought the apartment from Jelena Kalinic, the wife of Sretko Kalinic.

"There are state organs that take care of that," he told reporters as he was visiting a Belgrade hospital on Tuesday, and added he "does not wish to take part in the election campaign."

Loncar asked a KRIK reporter "what was controversial about the contract" - and when asked whether he "received or bought" the apartment, replied, "What does the contract say?"

The reporter then said the contract stated that the apartment was bought, to which Loncar replied, "Am I psychic and did I know, in 2000 and something, who Jelena and Sretko Kalinic were?"

The minister then remarked it was "much more important whether KRIK has paid all the taxes that the state is supposed to live on."
