Serbia to follow suit if migrant route states close borders

If some countries on the Balkan migrant route close their borders, Serbia will have to make "a similar decision," Ivica Dacic said on Tuesday.

"It's important that countries keep each other informed about migrants and that there are no surprises, but a predictable policy," said Dacic.

Kurz announced that his country would limit the reception of refugees to 37,500 people during 2016, adding that this quota "is slowly filling up."

He said the goal is to stop migrants at the Greek-Macedonian border and that it was "important that Serbia is included in this," announcing that a number of Austrian soldiers and policemen will be sent to that border.

"I don't believe that the mass of refugees will want to stay in Serbia now, but that instead, fewer will start their journey once they see the policy of open doors has changed. It is of decisive importance to change the approach," he said.

Kurz stressed that he wants to "talk about this" during his tour of the Western Balkans so that all countries on the route, including Serbia, can prepare themselves.

Asked whether there was a deal in place to transport migrants directly, by rail, from Athens to Berlin, the Austrian minister replied negatively, adding that his country was not prepared to support it.

"We are thinking in the opposite direction, to stop them at the Greek-Macedonian border. Faster transport to the Austrian border will not be a solution," Kurz said.

Dacic declined to comment, saying the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs "does not deal with that."
