EU official "hopes Russia won't undermine Serbia's EU path"

"Serbia is expected to progressively align its foreign policy with the EU. Serbia, like other countries of Europe, including EU members, develops relations with Russia. Serbia has traditional, strong, and trade ties with Russia. I am confident this will be possible to implement, but in a way that does not undermine the European path of Serbia and its accession to the EU," he said.

When it comes to "the road to EU" it is crucial for Serbia to to maintain and strengthen the momentum of reforms in 2016, said Davenport.

He added that the Serbian government has put economic reforms and the fight against corruption high on its list of priorities, and stressed that the EU strongly supports economic reforms. For the sake of improving the overall business climate in Serbia it will be very important to see significant progress this year when it comes consolidation of reforms in the area of judiciary, including the prosecution, effective fight against corruption, and strong respect for the rule of law, he said.

According to Davenport, Serbia has deservedly received praise for the role it has played in tackling the migrant crisis in the past few months, adding the EU provided about 30 million euros to support the country's efforts, particularly in humanitarian aid - food, clothing, as well as assisting in furnishing accommodation for the reception of refugees in the winter.

According to him, Serbia last year successfully responded to the challenge of chairing the OSCE, including the organization of the final meeting of its presidency in in December in Belgrade.

He said that the recent meeting of prime ministers of Serbia and Kosovo in Brussels was "good, with concrete results."

"Above all, an agreement was reached on the continuation of implementation of previous agreements, but it was also decided to go forward and talk about the topics that are important to both sides, including transportation," Davenport concluded.
