"Serbia still regional leader, Vucic has good reputation"

Serbia, he told Tanjug, acted in accordance with their leading role in the region - reforms were being implemented, 2015 had ended with better-than-expected economic results, security was improving and activities and reactions during the summer's refugee influx had honored border protection principles and showed solidarity with many desperate people, including woman and children.

"I think that with the decisions made in Belgrade by the government and PM Vucic, Serbia has shown a true European spirit in a better way than many EU member-states," said Frattini.

Commenting on the speculation that the West is trying to weaken Vucic, the former Italian official noted that would "lead neither the West, nor Europe, anywhere."

Frattini believes that Vucic was "completely right" when he rejected making any choice between the EU path and Serbia's "historic relations with the Russian Federation."

He added that he hoped "constant efforts of the government and the prime minister of Serbia" would also contribute to the EU soon returning to full cooperation and strategic relations with Russia - "something that would benefit both Russia and the EU."

Speaking about the region, Frattini said it was stable "from the institutional point of view" while the perspective of joining the EU "still acts as a magnet, bringing more stability and giving an additional impetus to reforms."
