Socialists' request for meeting "unrelated to elections"

Ruzic denied that insisting on an urgent meeting with Vucic had anything to do with the possible scheduling of parliamentary elections and "the formation of future coalitions."

"The SPS, as a state-making party that bears responsibility for citizens, and as the second political force in strength, wants to define the landmarks of future cooperation with the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) in the field of reforms and preservation of political stability and European values," Ruzic told the daily Danas on Thursday.

Asked to comment on the criticism coming from the Progressives, that the Socialists are not "loud enough in defending the prime minister's views," Ruzic said that the SPS group in parliament has been "very active in support of the policy of the government, in explaining legislative proposals and taking part in arguments-based debates on all issues of importance to the state."

He then described his party as "the most fair of coalition partners in the political landscape of Serbia."

"As for (my) relationship with Mr. Vucic, I do not have one for the simple reason that the coalition communication primarily takes place at the level of the parties' presidents," said Ruzic, whom the prime minister criticized on several occasions, causing tensions between the two parties.

Asked how the SPS planned to stop "the loss of membership - considering that (Aleksandar) Vulin and the SNS are poaching their cadres on a daily basis," Ruzic said that the membership of the SPS is now "more stable than ever, and is every day gaining in numbers."

"It would be dangerous if anyone took them away against the will of these individuals. I believe that this really is not about that, this is far from an epidemic - but also that these 'moral giants' and 'space experts' certainly with that move show what kind of 'cadre' they actually are," said Ruzic.
