High ranking opposition DS official leaves party

Member of the Serbian national assembly Borislav Stefanovic on Thursday confirmed for B92 that he had left the opposition Democratic Party (DS).

High ranking opposition DS official leaves party

He announced he would not "return" his parliamentary mandate to the DS, and would instead form his own movement - "The Left of Serbia - Borko Stefanovic."

Stefanovic, who was last month replaced as the head of the DS group in the assembly, said Ivan Jovanovic will also leave the DS club.

Stefanovic said he was leaving because he "no longer shares the DS program principles" and "no longer recognizes the current party ideology as close to him."

He announced he had already started collecting signatures in order to form a party "that will be the true opposition to Aleksandar Vucic."

"We expect elections in the first half of (next) year and we will take part at all levels. We will work to bring down the current regime using all available democratic means," Stefanovic stated.
